Top Gun

A style of post-generic filmmaking
Top gun (1986) directed by Tony Scott is a post-generic film, it is a hybrid genre as it has more than one traditional genre. It has three genres put together these are:Action,Drama and Romance. It is believed that the action appeals to the men and the relationships such as comedy, romance and drama appeal to women so Top gun is aimed at both audiences because it uses action to bring in the male audience and romance for the female audience.
Casting is crutial in a film Tom cruise was picked as he would draw in the female audience.

Use of extended montages
At the start of the film where we can see planes taking off the song playing is "danger zone" by Giorgio Moroder and Tom Whitlock this goes with what it happening in the scene and tells us what is going to happen in the film it also plays a few times again during the film.Another scene in the film which goes with the music is when he is playing volleyball with some men.The song playing is "Playing with the boys" by Kenny loggins,Ina Wolf and Peter wolf.

Production design frequently reflects the graphics, glossy look and layout of contemporary advertising styles
All directors aim to make every shot look like "a million dollars" which some of the shots actually do cost. This makes it more appealing to watch but doesn't always show any meanings in terms of the mise en scene.Advertising is important because of the simplicity of the High Concept narrative it is easy to summarise with a single picture to be used on the poster. The Top gun poster is simple and easy to understand. It shows us excately what the film is about which is about planes and romance.Which we can clearly see by the plane and the main character with the lady behind him.

Scenes are easily replicated in trailers

Formal excess
Top Gun go "over the top" with camera angles when it is the flying scenes they are very fast and are used to show off.

Music track interrupts the film narrative for a separate 'performance'
Normally in a High Concept film a musical sequence interrupts the narrative. This happens in Top Gun when they are flying the planes. In musicals the songs and dance is used to solve narrative problems.

Self concious allusion to other films and television

'Detached' appearance of stars, like the guest stars in a television series

Hyperbolic physiques of protagonists and hyperbolic action

Ironic distanciation: Walking-talking brand
